Overview

The Oncology research area is composed by nine groups addressing the principal unsolved issues in cancer. Their research covers fields such as child and adolescent cancer, melanoma, Gynecology, Urology, cancer stem cells and the molecular mechanisms of the tumor pathologies.

There are also three groups from the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine. These groups study the use of nanotechnology in biomedical applications to improve therapeutic strategies and diagnostics.

Group Leader: Santiago Ramon y Cajal Agüeras

Combing pathology and molecular biology, the aim of our group is to unravel the molecular mechanisms in cancer progression and chemotherapeutic drug resistance. In this line, we continued our work on cellular stress resistance in collaboration with the group of Nahum Sonneberg (McGil University, Canada). This work was published in Oncogene (Ramon Y Cajal S, et al) and PNAS (Robichaud N, et al). Through our expertise in pathology, we could furthermore contribute to groundbreaking research in cancer (e.g. Priego N et al, Nat Med) and obtained support as members of the LaCaixa research grant 2018 (PI: Fatima Gebauer, CRG). While maintaining our focus on tumor biology, we are currently moving towards the field of tumor heterogeneity, and published our first results in 2018 (Carrió M et al, Hum Mutat). In the coming years, we aim at studying the mechanisms underlying cellular communication through secreted factors (exosomes) and gap junctions (Trond Aasen) within a heterogeneous tumor.
