Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. Thirteen groups are currently part of this area, working closely with top clinicians at the hospital. The area encompasses different aspects related to neuroscience, such as neural development, neurodegeneration, neuroimmunology, neurological pain, mental health, neurosurgery, pediatric neurology or neuroimaging

There are groups also focused on cell signaling and apoptosis and translational bioinformatics.

Group Leader: Xavier de la Cruz Montserrat

Our research has focused on improving the ability of bioinformatics tools to identify disease-causing genetic variants. As part of this effort, we have participated, in collaboration with the Oncogenetics group (VHIO) in the international contest CAGI 5 where our pathogenicity predictors have ranked among the top positions. In parallel, we have started a collaboration with the group of Dr. Aquizu (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, USA) for studying the epigenetic component in neurological disorders. This project is evolving and has allowed us to create a powerful scientific relationship with the group of Dr. Bhoj, at the same university, in the Department of Pediatrics. The goal in this case is the interpretation of missense variants related to neurological disorders.
