Overview

The aim of the seven groups of this area is to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. The Epidemiology and Public Health group is mainly focused on the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare acquired infections, transmissible infections and on the new preventive vaccines. The Infectious Diseases group focuses on improving the strategies of clinical problems observed in clinical practice. Microbiology studies mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobials, pathogenicity, taxonomy and epidemiology, and infectious diseases diagnostics.

The CRIPS group focuses on the most prevalent aspects of infections in the intensive care unit (ICU), while SODIR group works in the areas of shock, organ dysfunction and resuscitation.

There is also a group focused on infection in immunocompromised pediatric patients, and a group from the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine interested in the synthesis, characterization and applications of engineered inorganic nanoparticles in the field of medicine.

The sepsis research line has participated in establishing new research priorities for sepsis and septic shock and how multifaceted educational intervention improves antibiotic treatment. This line is specially interested on the identification of biomarkers for the early diagnosis and stratification of septic patient. The acute respiratory failure research line published two important studies regarding the use of high flow nasal cannula supportive therapy and prone position in acute respiratory distress syndrome.

During 2018, SODIR started two funded projects (Health Institute Carlos III). The first study aims to analyze the DNA of the donor and its relationship with the pulmonary inflammatory response and the objective of the second study is to characterize patients with hemophagocytic syndrome.

SODIR is considered as an emerging research group by AGAUR. SODIR also has an important Clinical Research Unit that centralizes all the clinical trials that are carried out in the group.
