Overview

The Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM) area was created to enable a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach to research, development and transference of solutions for a group of diseases that are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio- and neurovascular diseases, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and kidney failure.

This area also includes a group focused on Ophtalmology research and the Medical Molecular Imaging multidisciplinary group.

Group Leader: Marco Inzitari

During 2018, the group has focused on implementing the ongoing projects, in particular: 1) DIALCAT (RIS3Cat, funded by FEDER via ACCIÖ), an observational and intervention study on the relationship within diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease; 2) IMAGINE (Marató TV3), an RCT on motivational interviewing to improve stroke patients’ adherence to rehabilitation. Papers published were 11 and 4 more were accepted for publication. We established an alliance on onco-geriatrics with the Geriatric Department of the Consorcio Hospitalario de Navarra. As other achievements, the group received the award for the best project of the Catalan Society for Healthcare Management, with the +ÀGIL project (innovative integrated care for frail older people in the community), and the European Unit geriatric Medicine award to take part in the European Accademy of Medicine of Aging (EAMA).
