Overview

The Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM) area was created to enable a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach to research, development and transference of solutions for a group of diseases that are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio- and neurovascular diseases, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and kidney failure.

This area also includes a group focused on Ophtalmology research and the Medical Molecular Imaging multidisciplinary group.

Group Leader: Prof. José García-Arumí

Basic research activities have been focused in two principal lines. In one hand, the development of a new therapeutic strategy for AMD based on antioxidant inorganic nanoparticles. The project was financed by the ISCIII-18 and the collaboration with Prof. Puntes was consolidated. We have reached the characterization of the AMD mouse model and the first positive results in pre-clinical tests, starting the patent procedures. In the other hand, the cell therapy research line. We have been working on the iPSCs-derived photoreceptor and RPE cell transplant, seeking for new funding opportunities and preparing a publication with the latest results. Regarding the clinical investigation, the group stablished a collaboration with 5 hospitals within the Ocular Pathology RETICS – Oftared network to start a phase III multicentric clinical trial that obtained a grant from the ISCIII-18, coordinated by Prof. García-Arumí. It is expected to start the recruitment phase during 2019.
