Overview

The Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM) area was created to enable a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach to research, development and transference of solutions for a group of diseases that are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio- and neurovascular diseases, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and kidney failure.

This area also includes a group focused on Ophtalmology research and the Medical Molecular Imaging multidisciplinary group.

Group Leader: Anna Rosell Novel

We have started the MAGBBRIS European project, coordinated by our group, which will generate new biomaterials to encapsulate the secretoma of endothelial progenitor cells with therapeutic properties for neurorepair in the context of the stroke. In preclinical models we have characterized the proteome of rat cerebrospinal fluid in cerebral ischemia by identifying interesting targets. At the MEGASTROKE Consortium, we identified 32 loci associated with stroke in more than half a million individuals. We have also initiated projects for the discovery of biomarkers of the stroke-associated infection leading a multicenter study, the Multi-Bio-Targets project for the study of prognostic biomarkers as new therapeutic targets for stroke and two new stroke-funded projects La Marató. In prevention, we have described the association of arterial stiffness with different markers of small vein disease and we have begun its evaluation in a new project in post-stroke cognitive impairment.
