Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. Thirteen groups are currently part of this area, working closely with top clinicians at the hospital. The area encompasses different aspects related to neuroscience, such as neural development, neurodegeneration, neuroimmunology, neurological pain, mental health, neurosurgery, pediatric neurology or neuroimaging

There are groups also focused on cell signaling and apoptosis and translational bioinformatics.

Group Leader: Joan Sahuquillo Barris

In 2018 we worked in brain contusions (BCs), one of the most frequent lesions in patients with traumatic brain injury. BCs increase their volume due to peri-lesional edema formation and/or hemorrhagic transformation. This may have deleterious consequences and its mechanisms are still poorly understood. We previously identified de novo upregulation sulfonylurea receptor (SUR1) in human BCs. This year, we studied the expression of the pore-forming subunit of KATP (Kir6.2) and identify its localization in different cell types, suggesting that further research on SUR1-regulated ionic channels may lead to a better understanding of key pathogenic mechanisms and identify novel targeted therapeutic strategies. During 2018, we organized an international symposium on neurocritical patients (PIC 2018) with 450 participants. Additionally, we remained involved in the ERN CRANIO, with a new COST Action project, and in 5 national and European grants (FIS, KidsBrainIT, BitMap, Marató TV3 and AECC)
