Overview

The Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM) area was created to enable a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach to research, development and transference of solutions for a group of diseases that are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio- and neurovascular diseases, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and kidney failure.

This area also includes a group focused on Ophtalmology research and the Medical Molecular Imaging multidisciplinary group.

Intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) and rituximab (RTX) are considered the standard of care in the treatment of active/chronic antibody mediated rejection (AMR). During 2018, we published the results of the first prospective, multicenter, placebo controlled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of this IVIG + RTX. The results of this trial were negative suggesting lack of efficacy oif the standard of care and pointing out the necessity to explore alternative treatments for AMR, the first reason for renal allograft failure.
The biobanc of nephrology expanded the collection of renal allograft biopsies and during 2018 started a collection of native kidney biopsies. At the time of each biopsy urine and serum and mononuclear peripheral blood cells are obtained.
During 2018, Maria Jose Soler, a senior nephrologist spending 2 years in Northwestern University in Chicago and working for several years at Hospital del Mar with a large experience in different experimental models, especially models of diabetic nephropathy joined our group and brought her expertise to the nephrology lab at Vall d’Hebron.
