Overview

The Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM) area was created to enable a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach to research, development and transference of solutions for a group of diseases that are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio- and neurovascular diseases, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and kidney failure.

This area also includes a group focused on Ophtalmology research and the Medical Molecular Imaging multidisciplinary group.

Group Leaders: Castell Conesa, Joan and Herance Camacho, José Raul

During 2018, we have performed some achievements as 1) Dr. Herance reached the Miguel Servet 2 contract, 2) the new metabolic treatment unit was become a national reference unit to treat patients, teach professionals and research. Thus, some clinical trials and teaching courses were performed mainly focused on new theranostic agents, 3) an image processing unit has set to perform image analysis and to develop new image processing tools and machine learning/artificial intelligent algorisms, 4) the project entitled “Nanomedicine and type 2 diabetes: Pathophysiological and clinical implications” has finished with some useful nanomaterials for treating type 2 diabetes and biomarkers using our novel metabolite analysis methodology. Also, our collaboration in the PRECISED project has finished for data analysis, and 5) we were granted by PERIS to join a postdoctoral student and by the IMI2 EU program to develop new immunoPET agents and a research platform for the I+D+i of inmunotherapies.
