Overview

The area of Research in Surgery includes more than 50 investigators distributed in five groups of research focused respectively on general and thoracic surgery, cranio-maxillofacial surgery, spinal disorders, skeletal reconstructive surgery and musculoskeletal tissue engineering. Their activity combines basic and clinical research together with robotics and virtual surgical planning. Their aims are to advance in the understanding of the causes and mechanisms underlying surgical pathologies, to deliver new knowledge and better integrated patient-centered solutions, improving surgical care and outcomes.

Group Leader: Manuel Armengol Carrasco

During 2018, the AGAUR-accredited group (2017-SGR-1476) has continued to develop its four main research programs (colorectal, endocrine, abdominal wall, and thoracic surgery), by means of introducing new, safe and more effective technologies and strategies, high-class research, and education. The number of synergies and projects shared with other VHIR research groups, as well as with other Universities, multicentric (international) actions, and also the number and impact of publications, has increased. It has participated in 3 clinical trials and 6 doctoral theses have been defended. Linking the GSRG research wet lab with several clinicians, a number of dedicated multidisciplinary projects have been developed, to both: continue investigating the fundamental biology of surgical pathologies such as hernia disease, pelvic organ prolapse, or morbid obesity, differentiating patient subtypes; and to contribute to novel biomaterials design and evaluation to ultimately improve abdominal wall closure and other surgical repair procedures. Some of the outputs, emerge from collaborations with different partners involved in the field of biomaterials.
