Overview

The Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Genetics area is focused on the research on the congenital malformations and pediatric diseases. The Fetal Maternal Medicine group creates synergies through the combined work of basic science researchers and clinical investigators in the preclinical basis of placental insufficiency complications and congenital heart disease. The Bio-Cell Fetal group, recently incorporated, studies basic pathophysiological mechanisms of fetal and pediatric congenital malformations, while the Growth and Development group does research on pediatric endocrine diseases. There is also a Genetics Medicine group that combines genetic diagnosis and research and is pioneer in Spain.

Group Leader: Elena Carreras Moratonas

In 2018 we continued to work on placental insufficiency, and we incorporated the first trimester screening of preeclampsia to the routine care.

We added the non-invasive prenatal testing to prenatal diagnosis and screening of aneuploidies.

We published some studies in the field of preterm delivery, including the thesis of Dr. Pratcorona; and Dr. Carlota Rodó presented her thesis in the field of Zika virus and published the results.

Dr. Lorena Fernández was incorporated to our team as researcher and Dr. Pablo García joined us as a PhD researcher in both fetal medicine and placental insufficiency.

We obtained funding for basic research in the landmark of prenatal myelomeningocele repair and for clinical research in placental insufficiency.

We continued with our teaching tasks with Maternal & Fetal Medicine Courses, named “Ecografía obstétrico-ginecológica”, “Actualización en Diagnóstico Prenatal”, “Atenció al Dol Perinatal”, “Insuficiencia placentaria y prematuridad”.
