The aim of the seven groups of this area is to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. The Epidemiology and Public Health group is mainly focused on the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare acquired infections, transmissible infections and on the new preventive vaccines. The Infectious Diseases group focuses on improving the strategies of clinical problems observed in clinical practice. Microbiology studies mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobials, pathogenicity, taxonomy and epidemiology, and infectious diseases diagnostics.

The CRIPS group focuses on the most prevalent aspects of infections in the intensive care unit (ICU), while SODIR group works in the areas of shock, organ dysfunction and resuscitation.

There is also a group focused on infection in immunocompromised pediatric patients, and a group from the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine interested in the synthesis, characterization and applications of engineered inorganic nanoparticles in the field of medicine.

Among the highlights of 2018, we have been granted financial aid by Instituto de Salud Carlos III to develop a clinical trial to compare the immunogenicity of an adjuvanted anti-hepatitis B vaccine with the one with increased antigenic load in immunosuppressed patients. Our group was selected to participate in the DRIVE study, a European initiative to measure the brand-specific influenza vaccine effectiveness in EU/EEA supported by the European Horizon 2020. And also, in collaboration with researchers from other specialties, our team coordinated and published a guideline for the human papilloma virus vaccination in patients with high-risk conditions which serves as a guide for any health professional that has to attend these patients.

As for other lines of work, the team has continued to collaborate with the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Catalonia on the epidEMcat registry and the ENVIN national registry regarding device related infections in more than 200 spanish intensive care units.

Among the training activities organized by our group we highlight the XXII edition of the Vaccine Update Course.
