Overview

The Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM) area was created to enable a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach to research, development and transference of solutions for a group of diseases that are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio- and neurovascular diseases, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and kidney failure.

This area also includes a group focused on Ophtalmology research and the Medical Molecular Imaging multidisciplinary group.

Group Leader: Rafael Simó

We finished the EUROCONDOR project funded by the EC (FP7-HEATH-278040-2. 6M€). This project, coordinated by Prof. Simó, includes a clinical trial that demonstrated for the first time that topical administration of neuroprotective drugs prevent the progression of retinal neurodegeneration in type 2 diabetic patients. In addition, the study showed that a significant proportion of patients with type 2 diabetes presented early microvascular disease without detectable neurodysfunction. This new comprehensive understanding of DR emphasizes the need for better phenotyping and stratification of patients with DR not only by using methods addressed to measure microvascular impairment, but also by incorporating measurements of retinal function.

We demonstrated that the assessment of retinal sensitivity in combination with parameters of fixation by using microperimetry could be a reliable method for detecting prodromal stages of dementia in the T2D population.

We have identified several SNPs for predicting the rate of sustained weight loss and diabetes remission after bariatric surgery.
