Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. Thirteen groups are currently part of this area, working closely with top clinicians at the hospital. The area encompasses different aspects related to neuroscience, such as neural development, neurodegeneration, neuroimmunology, neurological pain, mental health, neurosurgery, pediatric neurology or neuroimaging

There are groups also focused on cell signaling and apoptosis and translational bioinformatics.

Two members of our group were part of the panel that developed the new criteria for multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnostics. Main changes included derived from our work: oligoclonal bands are incorporated and the symptomatic lesion contributes to lesion count. Moreover, spinal cord lesions at disease onset are associated with a higher risk of disability and contribute to establish a more reliable diagnosis. We found an association between functional magnetic resonance imaging-derived resting-state networks and response to cognitive rehabilitation and highlighted the relevance of deep grey matter atrophy development for disability accrual. We focused on the benefits of physiotherapy as add-on therapy to steroids in relapse treatment and on the possible differences between conventional aerobic activity and aerobic activity through Nordic walking. We identified the levels of the neurofilament-light chain in cerebrospinal fluid as independent predictors of clinical conversion in early stages of MS.
