Overview

The Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Genetics area is focused on the research on the congenital malformations and pediatric diseases. The Fetal Maternal Medicine group creates synergies through the combined work of basic science researchers and clinical investigators in the preclinical basis of placental insufficiency complications and congenital heart disease. The Bio-Cell Fetal group, recently incorporated, studies basic pathophysiological mechanisms of fetal and pediatric congenital malformations, while the Growth and Development group does research on pediatric endocrine diseases. There is also a Genetics Medicine group that combines genetic diagnosis and research and is pioneer in Spain.

Group Leader: Manuel Lopez Paredes

The research group of Bioengineering, Cell Therapy and Surgery in Congenital Malformation is formed by clinical researchers (pediatric surgeons, neonatologists and obstetricians) and by basic researchers (biochemists, biotechnologists and biologists), which makes up a large multidisciplinary team with extensive experience in biomedical and clinical research.

The main objective of the different lines of research carried out is to study the causes that cause human congenital malformations, especially spina bifida and congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and the development of new therapies based on advanced surgical techniques, as well as through the use of cell therapy to promote the regeneration of tissues for therapeutic purposes and generate new treatments to alleviate or cure these serious diseases. Our team develops a research with a great translational spirit to the human clinic, which has allowed our hospital to become a European reference center for prenatal spina bifida repair.
