Overview

The Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM) area was created to enable a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach to research, development and transference of solutions for a group of diseases that are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio- and neurovascular diseases, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and kidney failure.

This area also includes a group focused on Ophtalmology research and the Medical Molecular Imaging multidisciplinary group.

Group Leaders: David García-Dorado García
This Annual Report is in memory of our beloved group leader and former VHIR’s Director Dr. David García-Dorado García who passed away in August, 2019. Dr. Ignacio Ferreira recognizes his excellent career in this article

During 2018, a large multidisciplinary cooperative project on the stratification of cardiovascular risk in diabetic patients (PRECISED) with 8 VHIR groups leaded by the Group on Cardiovascular Diseases has been finished, and ambitious independent multicenter clinical trials on aortic disease (BICATOR) and myocardial infarction (COMBAT-MI) leaded by our group have been almost completed. Important articles have been published on ischemic heart disease (relation to cardiac ageing, risk factors, management of acute events), Marfan syndrome, arrhythmias and congenital heart disease, as well as in transversal research lines, as cardiac imaging (4D-Flow in cardiac NMR studies) or clinical epidemiology (cost-effectiveness, risk stratification). Important advancements have been made in the transference of knowledge to the industry and the society, as the development of a new treatment against ischemia-reperfusion injury and adverse myocardial remodeling based on the inhibition of calpains.
