Overview

The Oncology research area is composed by nine groups addressing the principal unsolved issues in cancer. Their research covers fields such as child and adolescent cancer, melanoma, Gynecology, Urology, cancer stem cells and the molecular mechanisms of the tumor pathologies.

There are also three groups from the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine. These groups study the use of nanotechnology in biomedical applications to improve therapeutic strategies and diagnostics.

The research interest of the group is focused on the molecular basis of skin cancer progression and treatment. Our research contributed with novel discoveries on skin tumors developed in patients harboring a rare disease named Epidermolysis Bullosa. We genetically defined these tumors and managed to developed a unique PDXs from these tumors, that have attracted collaborations world-wide to study this rare disease. Additionally, we have contributed to the discovery of a novel molecule involve in cell survival and chemoresistance of cancer stem cells, promoting the generation of novel therapeutic molecules against cancer and other diseases. We also participated in a study that contributed to clarify the evolutionary origin of papillary and anaplastic thyroid cancers that will help to stratify patients for treatment.

Following our research in melanoma, we have opened two new projects dedicated to find new treatments for melanoma including subtypes lacking a first line of treatment.
