Overview

The Oncology research area is composed by nine groups addressing the principal unsolved issues in cancer. Their research covers fields such as child and adolescent cancer, melanoma, Gynecology, Urology, cancer stem cells and the molecular mechanisms of the tumor pathologies.

There are also three groups from the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine. These groups study the use of nanotechnology in biomedical applications to improve therapeutic strategies and diagnostics.

We highlight achievements in the CEMARK project, a molecular tool to diagnose endometrial cancer (PCT international patent and national phases with our two patents; the international program Bioenterpreneur Bootcamp (EiTHealth & BioM), a review article, and an award in the MSACL 2018 EU congress)). The group strengthen the research on personalized treatment creating a biobank of PDX models and obtained an AECC Grupos Estables and a RETOS project. In ovarian cancer (OC) we highlight our results on the tumor suppressive role of a miRNA (Oncogene,2019) and our advances in the role of the Plk1 activator Bora as well as the molecular understanding of the BRCA1 landscape. We obtained a PI2018 (ISCIIII). In the endometriosis, we completed the work of CDTI grant aimed to describe different molecular profiles throughout the menstrual cycle in endometriotic and adenomyotic patients, developing an algorithm to predict endometriosis or adenomyosis. On the clinical side, we highlight results in conducting multicenter studies through the research network of the Spanish Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (SEGO), implementation of the ERAS program (Enhaced Recovery After Surgery), completion of the PROFAST study, and consecution of the M-Trap clinical study.
